October 30, 2008 --
Once again, greetings and salutations. And to all you ghosts, ghouls, and goblins -- next stop, before you realize it, will be Thanksgiving, Christmas, and then New Year's. Maybe it's too early in the game, but I've got to tell you just the same, make plans to be with us on New Year's Eve in the Tiara Ballroom at the Trump Taj Mahal. For the last ten years our New Year parties in Casino Town have been sold out well in advance, so check it out early by calling the Taj at 877-725-3378. Now, let's ask the Geator.
I am originally from Reading and never missed your show -- the Wagner Walk, the Stomp, and others! Do you broadcast on any radio station near Savannah, Georgia? I've been in South Carolina for 18 years and they do not know how to dance like we did. There was nothing like the music in those days. I sure miss it!! - Sandy, Bluffton, SC
Unfortunately we don't, but you can get us on the internet Monday through Friday on wvlt.com between 5-7 pm and on Saturdays at xpn.org from 6-7 pm. And even though they don't do the line dances and other wonderful dances that came from Philadelphia and South Jersey, the Carolinas certainly have their own form of dancing, which is known as the Shag -- almost like doing the Jitterbug with different movements and steps.
I have been trying to find the name of the female singer featured on your 9/20 show. Her first name is Rosemary, but I didn't get her last name. Can you help me? - David T.
Last name is Yuro -- but on record she was called Timi, from her middle name, Timotea. The record company, wisely enough, thought her real first name, Rosemary, was not suited to a younger audience and might be confused with Rosemary Clooney. Thus we have the great Timi Yuro.
I'm hoping you can help me identify a song from my childhood. I'm guessing it was around 1973 or 1974. The lyrics go: "I like the summertime/When the girls wear their dresses so low/You can see the sun on their t-t-t-t-t-t-tan skin." The chorus goes, "It's oh so good, it's oh so fine, in the summertime." People steer me to the oh-so-not the right Mungo Jerry song, among others. I would be crazy indebted to you if you had any leads. - Dana
You're right, it's not the Mungo Jerry song "In the Summertime," it's "Summertime" by the Troggs, a regional hit in 1977. And I'm sure you know the Troggs from another novelty song they recorded -- "Wild Thing."
My favorite album is not on your list of CDs -- the Guess What album. - Cuz50
That album came about because of the listeners who called in every night with dedications. Many of the songs I was playing were requested constantly, but in those days you could only put about 12 cuts on an album. My concept was to call the album Guess What? and put a list of the 25 most requested songs on the cover, with a sticker saying, "Guess which 15 of these 25 songs are on this album?" It has become a collector's item, but the songs from it are all in my current CD collection.
Got a question for Jerry? Send it to AskTheGeator@acweekly.com or Geator Gold Radio, 626 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106. For info on Jerry's appearances, check out geator.net -- and keep on rocking, 'cause you only rock once!
